Several students worked very diligently to both research and produce this short documentary on the topic of how to balance our first amendment rights of freedom of speech and religion, and the precedents set of separation of church and state (religion in school). These students will be participating in an exciting debate and discussion on the topic with students from around the country this Thursday, December 6 as part of the National Constitution Center's program , The Exchange.

Teaching religion in school and being open to these controversies in my opinion is healthy in a democratic society. We shouldn't pretend that religions do not exist nor avoid possible arguments in the classroom. Teachers should be trained on how to handle conversations where all sides need to be addressed and to be able to encourage tolerance. This can be achieved through dialog. However, I wasn't aware that a student (felicia's story) could be suspended for quietly praying during lunch.
